Imposition of additional duties on all Mexican origin goods effective June 10.

On May 31st, in a Presidential Statement, Trump announced the imposition of a 5% duty on all Mexican origin goods to go into effect June 10, 2019. The rate will gradually increase each month to 25% if Mexico does not take decisive measures to reduce the influx of illegal immigration.

President Trump invoked the authorities granted to him by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act in order to deal with what he perceives as a crisis at the southern border caused by “… Mexico’s passive cooperation …” and announced the imposition of a 5% duty on all Mexican origin goods (including NAFTA qualifying goods) to go into effect June 10, 2019. Thereafter, the rate will increase 5% at the beginning of the month until reaching 25% in October and will remain at that level if Mexico fails to alleviate the “.. illegal migration crisis …”.
